Green Toyota 03:34
Winter’s on my shoulder, I’m so excited Meeting your parents for the first time And you pick me up in your Green Toyota The one you bashed right through the side I’ll do it I’ll take you for Oh, oh I’ll do it I’ll take you for Oh, oh I’ll do it I’ll take you for Your friends don’t like me, been to two weddings, Not a place card with my name in sight But you drove five hours, in your Green Toyota I wonder if God is on our side I’ll do it I’ll take you for Oh, oh I’ll do it I’ll take you for Oh, oh I’ll do it I’ll take you for And now we’ve bought your parents house And babe we’re gonna make it great And if you look at the wall outside There’s a lick of green paint And now we’ve bought your parents house And babe we’re gonna make it great And if you look at the wall outside There’s a lick of green paint I could do this for Oh, oh I’ll do it I’ll take you for Oh, oh I’ll do it I’ll take you for Maybe we’re done with the swings and the roundabouts Now we’re not coming up short We were like kids on the day when we first I Wanna do it some more Maybe we’re done with the swings and the roundabouts Now we’re not coming up short We were like kids on the day when we first I Wanna do it some more Do it for Oh, oh I’ll do it I’ll take you for Oh, oh I’ll do it I’ll take you for life Oh, oh

She said I knew you had the look of a foreigner about you And I don’t think she meant the band She said you look good in that tan but it was February Sure I can find some cream for that And I love it when you post your Black Lives Matter posters But you won’t ever let me in I’m not dark enough, not brown enough, not white enough for you baby Let’s just call this what it is I’m not white like you I came out the right shade Are you throwing shade on me again because I I’m not white like you Tell me I’m a walking crime Baby am I doing time for this because I I’m not white like you I’m not white like you Tell me am i white like you? I’m sick, so sick of being called exotic That’s not a compliment my dear Fed up of ticking all your tiny little ethnic boxes Your boxes fill me with the fear I’m not white like you I came out the right shade Are you gonna throw some shade on me again because I I’m not white like you Tell me I’m a walking crime Baby am I doing time for this because I I’m not white like you I’m not white like you Tell me am I white like you I’m beautiful the way I am And you can’t make me feel the shame And they can write us out of history But we stay, but we stay And I’ll make you feel this way

Tongue tied Lost in translation Tangled up in vernacular expression Wasted Wasting every moment Using every single breath I have on you Did you ever think of me Or did you ever try to leave Speak now Forever hold a piece of me Is this what it’s like to breathe Speak now I’m screaming from the precipice Now that they can all hear me Speak now Speak now Staring at the bedroom wall Wondering why you didn’t call Wondering why you didn’t call my name You ask how many kids well have I said two you said three So we’ll have five But we’ll never get out this world alive Do you ever think of me Or did you ever try to leave Speak now Forever hold a piece of me Is this what it’s like to breathe Speak now I’m screaming from the precipice Now that they can all hear me Speak now Speak now Do you ever think of me Or did you ever try to leave Speak now Forever hold a piece of me Is this what it’s like to feel Speak now Forever hold a piece of me Is this what it’s like to breathe Speak now I’m screaming from the precipice Now that they can all hear me Speak now Speak now

Thirsting for some connection But I breathe fire and disdain I'm a contradiction of existence Pulling you in And pushing you away Every time I reach out You just increase the pain I'm a contradiction of existence Pulling you in And pushing you away Maybe in some Some other life We would have loved (Better than we do right now) Maybe in books In fantasies In magical realms Maybe in some Some other life (We'd learn to love again) Maybe in some Some other life We'd learn to love well I'm the princess in the tower But all the heroes ran away And all I'm left with are the dragons And look at me now the queen of fire and flame Every time I reach out I just increase my pain I'm a contradiction of existence Pulling you in And pushing you away Maybe in some Some other life We would have loved (Better than we do right now) Maybe in books In fantasies In magical realms Maybe in some Some other life (We'd learn to love again) Maybe in some Some other life We'd learn to love well And every time I reach out you hurt me I want to be your friend but you hurt me Why are you behaving selfishly Down and down down we go down we go Down and down down we go down we go Maybe in some Some other life We would have loved (Better than we do right now) Maybe in books In fantasies In magical realms Maybe in some Some other life (We'd learn to love again) Maybe in some Some other life We'd learn Maybe in some Some other life We would have loved (Better than we do right now) Maybe in books In fantasies In magical realms Maybe in some Some other life (We'd learn to love again) Maybe in some Some other life We'd learn to love well

about

Growing up in a conservative community meant that Jay self-censored her songwriting all her life. “I was scared of being anything. Of being my true self” she says. In 2020 she finally made a decision to start writing the pop album she'd always dreamed of writing, a collection of songs exploring themes of empowerment and new beginnings and breaking free of the constructs holding her back.

After being awarded the Do It Differently Fund through Help Musicians, Jay worked with ingenious producer Patrick Jordan (Young Rebel Set, Cattle & Cane) to create the 10-track pop album. The album includes “American Tennessee,” one of the first songs to be recorded, which has since made it to the semi-finals of the International Song Writing Contest out of 20,000+ entries, won Track of the Week on BBC Tees and was in the roundup of BBC Introducing Tees Best of 2021.

Jay has lived quite internationally, spending most of her childhood in Turkey, studying as a teenager in Sevenoaks, UK, taking a year out as a TV trainee in Copenhagen, then back to Turkey for a bit before finally ending up back down the road from Stockton in Middlesbrough. The album has one or two nods to moments of Jay’s past life in Turkey, “One Summer’s Day” a coming-of-age track about a romance that never happened and “Seventeen” journals the feeling of being 17 again through dance-pop lyrical mix of Turkish and English, bringing together Jay’s two cultural identities.
